Cartier Watch Important Date Information

• Founded in 1847 by the son of a powder horn maker; the founders name: Louis-Franois Cartier

• In 1874, Louis’s son took over the company; his name was Alfred; and he expanded the business substantially; two decades later, Alfred’s son Louis.

• 1904; the “Santos” was born when Louis made a watch for the then famous South American aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont.  This watch is still being sold today, looking much like it did over 100 years ago.

• 1933; Cartier was commissioned by the Pasha of Marrakech to create a watch he could wear when he went swimming.  The round cased watch was one of the earliest water resistant watches of the time; it was round in design and was, of course, solid gold.

• 1942; Louis Cartier dies; those following his vision were unable to make it work and company fell on hard times; it was eventually taken over by a consortium in the 70’s and they are once again making fine watches.
